TMC + Kodak film grant / FAQ
Hello everyone. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a new link at the top right of your screen. What is it, you ask? Well, I’ve I partnered too much chocolate (TMC) up with Kodak to offer film grant program, which will provide 10 non-represented photographers with the film they need to fully execute a new or ongoing personal project, to be completed during 2010.
All the information about the grant is over there, so please check it out before applying. Submissions open September 1st, 2009. Click here to begin the submission process.
This post will also serve as the FAQ section for the grant. It will grow. If you do not see the answer to your question, feel free to use the contact form above to reach me.

FAQ
Q: WHERE IS THE LINK TO THE SUBMISSION WINDOW?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
A: Click here to submit your project proposal for the film grant.
Q: Hmmmmm, this looks like a big ol’ rights grab to me…
A: This grant isn’t a rights grab. It’s about trying to get film in the hands of talented people who don’t have the financial resources to make incredible, promising projects. That’s it. Grant recipients own and retain rights to every image they create.
I realize that magazines and companies asking for a plethora of free photographs in exchange “exposure!” or a pair of jeans are the bane of the photography world right now, but honestly, Kodak having your back (and working to support your career) will help rather than hurt you. They’re not in this to get some free marketing collateral, they’re in it to help emerging photographers out.
Q: Where did you get that silly name? It has nothing to do with photography at all, which I think is stupid.
A: Thanks! I was making chocolate chip pancakes one morning, during the week I was brainstorming the site back in December. I put too many chocolate chips in, and I basically made chocolate disks. They were disgusting, I couldn’t eat them. Too much chocolate was born. Now I get spam from Betty Crocker and coffee companies. www.X-tremeX-posures.com is still available, if you want to start that one up.
Q: I have many project ideas, can I submit a grant proposal for each?
A: No, 10 film grants will be given to 10 different photographers. Submit your strongest project idea and call it a day.
Q: What if I have a very long-term project that won’t be completed by the end of 2010?
A: That’s ok, but you need to come to some sort of tangible rest point/end-of-chapter in the project by the end of that year- enough that the project could be showcased as a cohesive/sure-footed work in progress, not a messy, loose-ended one.
Q: What if I just want film and don’t have a project yet?
A: Well, think one up.
Q: I live in Thailand/Macau/Bermuda/Nova Scotia/Russia/Ethiopia/Estonia. Is that cool?
A: Yeah, that’s cool. You may live anywhere in the world, but cannot have gallery or agency representation.
Q: Is the submission process all done online?
A: Yes.
Q: Are you covering processing costs as well?
A: No, processing costs are left up to you.
Q: Can I send prints?
A: Only digital submissions will be allowed, and images will be viewed by judges on screen only. No prints may be mailed.
Q: I still don’t see the answer to my question here. What on earth should I do?
A: Use the contact form (above tab) to get at me, and I’ll help you out.
Q: When exactly does the submission window close?
A: The TMC + Kodak Film Grant submissions will close at 11:59pm on Nov. 1st, not Oct. 31st.

This is a great opportunity for those photographers (amateur, professional, etc) who are still shooting film despite the shift to digital. I might say I’m amazed with your initiative and also with the cooperation of Kodak.
This opportunity makes me strive more and taking more photographs. I wonder what film would be supplied. For color, Ektar and for black and white might be Tri-X or Plus X or Double X movie stock film.
Anyway, goodluck with all the photographers who will participate in this.
I can’t wait to enter. I’ve had a project in my mind for a really long time, and now maybe I will get the chance to accomplish it.
I just loved this: Q: Where did you get that silly name? It has nothing to do with photography at all, which I think is stupid.
The name is awesome!

hello,
great idea..i was just filling in the submission form..started off by..
“..’spot the racist’ is my ongoing project. can you really know someone’s beliefs just by looking at them? call them a racist given their attire or hair-do? in judging who is a racist, are we not one our self?..” “faithful tri-x user for quite some time..i went on to say..
then i came to the pay-pal part..
pay to receive..nice generous concept, lucrative, too, one might add!!
shouldn’t this have been addressed in the fun and titillating QnA section?
Hey Mark, the grant information, including the submission fee, is right there on the main info page, between ‘description’ and the judge list. Not trying to hide anything.
One might add that, in a sea of $75-$200 admission/submission/entry fees for various photo contests and grants, $10 is not all that lucrative.

What kind of film will be supplied? 120 mm as well?
Any kind, any format that Kodak sells and has in stock.
What do you guys think is a reasonable amount of film to ask for?
interesting how they want to give away film - yet they want the submissions to be in digital format-
Okay, it’s late and I probably missed it, but what will be the extent of the actual support that Kodak is giving in terms of film? i.e. how much film?
Tim Thats what I have been wondering as well.
could someone answer this?
